Zeniba, Spirited Away
I didn’t hate a guy who falls in love with persocoms, I hated people with half-assed relationships, human or persocom.
Just watched another Ghibli movie which once again reminds us to be more concern with earth’s health; Gedo Senki or Tales from Earthsea in English (click picture below to watch).
** SPOILERS **
In that world, one should keep his real name because anybody can control others by having their real names.
Also, that world was then unbalanced because humans had exploited the earth without restoring it. Dragons, which lived in air and fire, had appeared in humans’ territorry, which is earth and sea. This is just one of the effects of the disturbance of the balance.
And so, there was a boy, prince, called Arren who stabbed his own father, the king. Arren proclaimed that he was not himself but as if someone’s inside him controlling him; and this self appeared again when Arren tried to save Therru.
Therru, a girl with a burn scar on her face. It’s been said that she was abused by her parents when little, the scar was a proof. Therru had been living for 5 years with Tenar who adopted her.
Tenar was a friend of Sparrowhawk, the most powerful wizard, aka Archmage. Sparrowhawk was on his journey to restore balance in that world. He met Arren in his journey and had been taking after him ever since. Sparrowhawk and Arren lived in Tenar’s house for awhile.
And then there was Cob, a wizard who searched for eternal life. By means to obtain it, Cob disturbed the balance in the world.
Aside of the main plot of restoring balance in the world, this movie had another significant message for me. That is, to face our own self and accept it as they are.
Arren first feared of his ownself and rejected the darkness within him, and by doing that rejecting the light as well. However you look at it, light will not exist without darkness and darkness will not exist without light. Arren had became empty by that time. Therru confronted and challenged Arren to face his fear.
Arren, they’ve got Tenar and Sparrowhawk. They’ll die if we don’t do something! They’ll die! We’ll lose both of them! We’ll lose the most important thing in the world.
Therru, what is the most important thing?
Life is the most important thing.
We’ll all die someday. What does it matter?
Why fight for life? We know it’s going to end anyway.
No! Life is precious because we know we’re going to die!
You’re afraid to live the only life you have!
You think your life belongs to you?
Tenar gave me life. That’s why I have to live to give life to someone else.
That’s the only way we live forever.
Who the hell was Lebannen? See for yourself in the movie XD
Would Arren accept the challenge? Would he accept his whole self? Would he live?
will I accept the same challenge, to accept my whole self and live?
Like us, Black Jack was a normal human and he also learned a lot of things from people around him. Gera, Black Jack’s friend in high school, was one of them.
This was taken from Black Jack episode 42 *contains spoiler
Black Jack was full of anger and hatred. His mother and him were badly injured and his mother didn’t survived. His father went overseas with a new woman. BJ had to go through hard rehabilitation. He didn’t know how to smile or laugh. Until he met Gera in high school.
Gera always laughed loudly and brightly. It pissed BJ off. At last, BJ couldn’t stand it, he confronted Gera and that’s where he found out that Gera had a bad life as well. Gera’s parents had a lot of debts and they just left to another city, leaving Gera behind. Nonetheless, he said that he was still lucky because his parents didn’t kill him. Gera even said that BJ was also lucky that he had a wonderful surgeon so he could survived. BJ couldn’t believe what he just heard, but they became good friends after since.
One day, BJ came to Gera’s house. Gera told BJ that he wanted to be a mangaka artist and he showed his work. BJ smiled and Gera was so happy to see it. He said…
After that, debt collectors came and they hurt Gera. BJ, who brought darts that day used throw a dart and hit one of the debt collectors. The debt collector fought back but the dart hit Gera on the neck, causing him unable to speak, let alone laugh.
After BJ graduate his medical school, he treated Gera. After the operation he told Gera to continue his dream be a mangaka artist. BJ also showed his gratitude being Gera’s friend. He told him that…
A few days later, BJ got news that Gera died. Gera laughed very brightly and loudly for a couple of minutes, after that he died within seconds.
BJ went through many stories in his life, this was just one of them. I couldn’t imagine what BJ would have been if he hadn’t met Gera. BJ acquired his “kind” side from Gera, now he could smile, he could laugh, he could be grateful.
Let’s take a look at ourselves now. There are also moments and people in our life. Cherish them, even those hard ones, you will see that they are all connected later.
Because God can use any thing, any time, any people to shape us.
Do you know an anime called “Saiyuki”? Maybe the one you know is the story about a monk and his three friends who went on a journey to the west. Saiyuki is made from that tale; Minekura Kazuya elaborated the tale into several series. Minekura also made a prequel to Saiyuki – Saiyuki Gaiden – where Goku meets Konzen, Kenren and Tenpou in heaven before Goku was expelled to earth and caged for more than 500 years. In Saiyuki series, Konzen reincarnated to Sanzo, Kenren to Gojyo and Tenpou to Hakkai. That’s the short introduction to Saiyuki, what I want to share further is in the story of Saiyuki Gaiden.
!!! CAUTION THIS CONTAINS SPOILERS !!!
Konzen was born as an official in heaven, his life was so smooth… and very boring, until Bosatsu (the merciful goddess who is also Konzen’s aunt) brought an animal -Goku- to heaven. That… was their first encounter.
Awesome… You’re shining! Like the sun. That animal‘s first words to Konzen as he touched Konzen’s golden long hair.
Annoyed, Konzen smacked the animal‘s head and called him bakazaru (stupid monkey).
Bosatsu saw that interesting and told Konzen to take care of the animal. Of course Konzen was super annoyed, knowing the animal very energetic and talkative with its innocent big smile. Even after all the smacks for being a nuisance for Konzen, Goku was still attached to Konzen..Later, Konzen gave the animal a name, Goku -Go = understanding and Ku = the void-.
Skip to the important part of the story, Konzen grew fond of Goku and really cared for him as his own son. Goku, was later known that he is Seiten Taisei (The Great Sage Equaling Heaven), broke his limiter which made him goes berserk. He killed lots of heaven’s army (where killing is forbidden in heaven) thus became a traitor and was pursued. Konzen, Kenren, and Tenpou were involved and pursued as well. They planned to escape to earth but Konzen, Kenren and Tenpou never made it.
In the development of the story, I really reflect what happened to Konzen. Konzen was once always bored and apathetic with all of the things around him, but was so alive and caring after Goku came to his life. Konzen was always been Goku’s sun from the beginning, but as the time goes by, he began to realize that Goku’s was his sun. At the end when Konzen knew he wouldn’t make it to earth he said,
Goku, you were the one who reached out to me first. Next time, I promise I’ll be the one to reach for you. I’ll definitely reach for you.
Konzen changed. His awareness towards others emerged, his stubborn personality subdued, his views of the world widened, he dared sacrifice his own life. All because of Goku.
One’s life is touched by a sun.
This might happened too, especially touched by a sun – the real sun, Jesus Christ that is.
Us born a Christian have lived smoothly in a comfort zone, almost too comfort that we might as well get bored. Taking God’s word emptily as common as other information. But hey, maybe we don’t realize that Jesus has made his encounter with us; in a positive or negative event. Us who deep down have been thinking that God’s word are so annoying, told countless time before and has no meaning to our life. But it never stops, why? Because we are also his precious suns. Us might go through a path where we start to see changes in ourselves and soon realized that we are getting fond of him because he always have been our sun, always lights our journey of life.
Hoped we can continue like Konzen, giving our whole life for that sun. Fulfill his command and promises until we meet again.
500 years later…
Wonder how… he’s so shiny… He’s almost like… almost like…
Watch “Hayao Miyazaki – The Essence of Humanity” on YouTube
Some of Miyazaki’s works are my favorite! Today I just found how Miyazaki thinks about his anime movies, never thought he’d think that far. Very inspiring indeed 🙂
View on Path
A few days ago, I watched this very old yet modern, fantasy movie from my favorite anime movie producer, Hayao Miyazaki. As you can see, the title is… Kaze no Tani no Naushika
Created in 1984, the technologies in the film are as good, or even better than techs nowadays. Hayao’s really good in air technologies and it could also be seen in this movie. The story plotted when earth was so polluted, some places had too much toxic in air that people must wear masks in those territory. The worst part polluted is the forest Sea of Decay; it’s been told that toxic come from there and take life from villages around it. Insects live there and they go rage (eyes red) if people wanted to destroy the forest.
Princess Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind was loved by her people and also by the insects in the Sea of Decay. It was peaceful until Tolmekian people attacked the Valley of the Wind and took Nausicaa for their plan destroying the Sea of Decay. Pejite people then involved also in this conflict; they too, wanted to destroy the Sea of Decay. Nausicaa wanted to save her people and the Sea of Decay -moreover after she had found out the secret of the forest-, but could she do it?
This movie is very touching and interesting to watch. Although it’s an old anime, but the animation and technologies are not bad, not bad at all. And above all, its message was clear and very related to our life 🙂 So, I really recommend you to watch it XD
My Japanese friend recommend the film to me.
Finally I watched it last month! And it was superb!
|From left: Saber, Archer, Rider|
Rider (Iskander a.k.a Alexander the Great, King of Conquerors) was inviting Saber (King Arthur, King of Knights –although in the anime Saber is a woman) and Archer (Gilgamesh, King of Heroes) to a dialogue of which king suits the Holy Grail best.
My treasury houses only the finest drinks and the finest of swords. This alone should indicate which among us is the greatest of kings.
Archer. Your finest drink is, indeed, worthy of the finest vessel. Unfortunately, the Holy Grail is not a drinking cup. First, we must hear what wish you would have the Grail grant.
You are not ruler here, pretender. Already, you violate the rules dictating that we must fight for the Grail. To begin with, the Grail should already be mine. All of this world’s treasures, without exception, trace their origin to my treasure house.
Then once you held the Grail? You would know it by sight?
No. Do not consider me as you would some lesser being. The amount of my wealth in my treasury long ago surpassed my own knowledge. But that is a treasure also means that it belongs to me. And any who would take it for themselves is naught but a thief.
Your words are no different than Caster’s insane rants. It appears he isn’t the only Servant to have gone mad.
Come, let’s not go that far… I believe I’ve got a clue to what his real name is. But Archer, you surely have no true interest in the Grail itself, do you?
Of course not. But I must administer my judgement to those who would steal treasure from me. It’s a matter of principle.
Huh. So then, Archer… Of what manner of duty and rules do you speak?
Of the law. The law I set down as king. you break the law, and I punish you. There is no place for discussion.
Which means, that all we have left to us is combat.
King of Conquest, you agreed that the Grail’s rightful ownership lies with another, so will you take it by force? What makes the Holy Grail so important to you?
I wish for true incarnation.
(Rider’s Master) Hey, wasn’t you goal supposed to be world conquest-
Idiot. Even if magic lends us form in this world, ultimately, we remain Servants. I wish for rebirth, as a human, to live within the world in which I’ve arrived. And with nothing but my body, I shall defy both heaven and earth. The is the meaning of conquest. Thus it begins, then proceeds, and it finished. Such is the path of my conquest.
That is hardly fitting of how a king should be.
Then let us hear what you would say.
I wish for my homeland’s salvation. With the omnipotent wish-granting device, I shall avert Britain’s fate of destruction.
Hey, King of Knights. Did you just say that you would change fate? Does that mean you wish to change the past?
Indeed. Even if it is a wish that a miracle alone cannot fulfill, if the Holy Grail is truly omnipotent, it will
Emm, Saber… Surely you do not mean that you would erase the marks you, yourself, have left on history?
Indeed. Why should that bother you? Why do you laugh? The country that gave me my blade, to which I offered my life, was destroyed. Why should it be strange for me to find that sad?
Did you hear that, Rider? What that little girl, who names herself King of Knights, said? “To which I offered my life…” *laughs again*
Why is that humorous?! To ensure their country’s prosperity, a king should make any sacrifice.
No. The king does not make offerings. The nation and the people, offer themselves to the king. not the reverse.
What? Those are a tyrant’s words!
Just so. We are heroes because we are tyrants. However, Saber, if a king regrets their rule or its conclusion, that king is nothing but a fool. Even worse than a tyrant.
Iskandar, your reign ended with your heirs slain, and your empire dissolved into three parts. You have no regrets about that end?
None. Not if it came to pass by my judgement and my retainers’ sacrifices… its destruction was inevitable. I shall grieve and I shall weep, but I shall never regret.
Let alone undo it! Such an act would be a mockery of all who fought with me!
Only warriors can find glory in destruction! Of what worth is a king who fails to protect the powerless? A just rule, with just laws… Those are the true duties of a king!
So you, the king, are a slave to what is right?
That is acceptable. A king is a martyr to their ideals.
That is not how a person should live.
If I rule the nation as a king, I cannot ask to live as a person. King of Conquerors, you seek the grail merely for your own benefit. you could never understand… You who became a ruler only to satisfy your endless greed.
A king without greed is even worse than a figurehead! Saber. You said you would martyr yourself for your ideals. In life, you must have been a pure saint. A proud and noble figure, certainly. But who can truly admire the martyr’s thorny path? Who dreams of such an ending? A king… The king must be greedier than any other. He must laugh more loudly and rage for longer. He must exemplify the extreme of all things, good and evil. That is why his retainers envy and adore him. And why the flames of aspiration, to be as the king is, can burn within his people. Proud king of chivalry… The righteousness and ideals you bore may indeed have saved your nation once. However, I’m certain you know what became of those who were saved, but left to themselves.
You saved them, but you never led them. You never showed them what a king should be. You abandoned your men when they lost their way. Then, alone and untroubled, you followed your own pretty little ideals. Thus, you are no true king. you are only a little girl, enraptured by a false idol of the king who serves others, but not themselves.
Saber! Archer! Here is our banquet’s final question. Must the king be alone?
The king must indeed be alone!
No, you don’t understand at all. I suppose I’ll have to show you exactly what a real king is. A king must live a grander life than any other’s and embody his people’s image of admiration! He who is worthy of all heroes’ envy, and he who leads the way, is the king! Therefore, the king is not alone. For his will equals that of all his followers together!
So, which king do you prefer to be your king? Or which king do you prefer if you are the king?
Looking at Pinoko’s faith and actions.
Isn’t it somehow similar to Christianity?
Not only God has given me life, but He also gave His own life.
And as Pinoko stated to use all of her life for BJ, so am I for Christ.
The next step for me is to follow Christ ’til the end although it’s tough;
Like Pinoko did!
